Listen to White Rabbit. Wait until the phal is almost dry before you water. You don't want the roots to rot from too much water. I killed my first phal that way. *cries*
Put a thin bamboo skewer into the moss near the center. Pull it out and if it is almost dry, time to water. I use this method with bark-based phals as well and keep the skewer embedded in the medium.

yeah - I've killed numerous Phals with too much water. I have a few now that have been doing well for some time, since I now wait for them to be dry, or at least very nearly dry - if plant is in a clear pot - I wait for roots to be silver.

*pats mab on the back* "A rose by any other name would smell as sweet." And a dtps that is renamed phal is still as pretty. I am sure there will not be a black mark on your permanent record if you still call them dtps.

Yes, Doritis and Dtps are all called Phals now. But apparently there are quite a few naming problems due to this lumping, as there exists Phals and Dtps with the same hybrid name, but are completely different plants. So that means that in some cases there are 2 plants with the same Phal name! So I don't think that Dtps will be completely phased out for some time yet.

Pretty little one. My only surviving mini Phal is similar colours.
As for the naming, I tend to use whichever name it was sold to be under. I have a Dtps Sin-Yuan Golden Beauty which I'll always use that name for even though I've seen it for sale under the Phal name as well. As WhiteRabbit says they'll probably get renamed again soon anyway the way these things go.
