Talking Schoenorchis and Vanilla

I Was at my local orchid nursery again yesterday and couldn't resist. I walked away with a Schoenorchis fragrans and another Vanilla planifolia variegata. I have wanted a Schoenorchis fragrans from the first time I saw it (roughly April when I first got into orchids) and finally bought one. It has not bloomed yet, but is definatly a blooming sized plant. The person I bought it from said he had never seen it bloom either. Now I just have to wait for it to bloom. Anyways, here are some pictures of the fragrans and the vanilla.

Great find! I don't have either of these plants, but they look very healthy. Happy growing!

You'll be surprised how much light Schoenorchis fragrans can take.

It was probably not getting enough light.

I had no problems with this plant blooming on the first run, and that was when I had a poor understanding of this plant.

Vanilla planifolia will bloom when it gets fairly large.

Schoenorchis fragrans should be grown like a tiny Vanda.

It gets misted twice a day because a fan is always on in the room. I mist the vanilla once a day because that's what my other one likes and has grown a foot In about a month(original vanilla)

How are you "misting" the Schoenorchis fragrans?

Why mist? Why not water them?

How are you growing the Schoenorchis frangrans? Mounted? Potted?

Well first of all the schoenorchis fragrans is mounted on a piece of wood with some moss to help hold moisture to the roots. I mist with deer park water because that is what I use for my geckos. I completely soak the wood and moss in water. Then I do it again when I get home from school because the moss is dry. Since it is closer to night I am careful not to get the crown wet.

Too much moss on the Schoenorchis fragrans.

In fact, you can probably do without it.

Try dismounting the Schoenorchis and remounting with much less moss underneath the roots, (edit) rather than have the moss on top of the roots.

Or you can be gutsy and try growing without moss at all.

There might be some root rot going on, or at least the beginnings of it.
