Because the roots are so akward that I can't make them squeeze any further down into the pot without breaking it's few good roots. Trust me, I tried...lol. I even presoaked the roots so they would be somewhat pliable.
LOL, ok that makes more sense! Ideally you would have needed to stick it back into a round pot then, like you say. If possible, I would try to do it now to avoid giving the plant yet another repotting shock in the spring.

Ok, I just decided I am going to call and tell her that the consensuses of the more experienced is that it needs to be fixed asap and her friend will just have to deal with it...lol.
Now that is just an insane picture! I've never seen a phal growing on a concrete wall like that! And what happens if you have to move? Take the wall with you? lol
Ahhhhh, Camille, you aren't allowed to move unless you are able to take your orchids with you. That's rule number 13C in the orchid code book.
This is the way they grow in the wild. Isn't it fantastic???? I just love it! Thanks for that picture.

The picture of the phals on the cinderblock is amazing! You should keep this picture handy for when people ask whether orchids are difficult to care for. You can show them the picture and say, "these guys grow like weeds on the side of my house!"
