See, That's why I dislike bark, It's wimpy
I had to water all my guys daily - well actually soak them in the sink for about 1 hr a day. During the winter season ... I soaked atlease 3 time per week. Drove me nutts, But that's what they needed to stay happy - Until I found sphag, my life changed
Just my opinion - your oncid looks very over potted, they like snug shoes.
lol Gloria. When I next repot my Onc., I will use part sphag and part bark, rock, charcoal mix. It's just not time to repot yet, so I'm leaving it in my current medium until which time. I agree with you though on the moisture issue. Sphagnum will hold moisture longer for sure and for those plants who LOVE the moisture at all times, sphag is the right choice.
First: The plant needs more water. It is going to dry out very quickly in that style of pot. Fresh bark does not retain water as well as bark that starting to break down.

Second: I have to agree with Ross, in nature what restricts the root growth. A large pot won't hurt it at all. If the plant had all the roots it should have they would more than fill the pot. Take a look at this divided 3 pseudobulb Sharry Baby growing in a 4 inch clay pot, (if you can see pot). I have since repotted and able to get most of the roots in a deep 8 inch pot.
So don't restrict the roots just get them to grow.
Ken, In Your photo, the 'chids doesn't appear to be over potted to me. Some real juicy roots there
I've learned my lesson with overpotting - Mold and fungus and the bottom of the pots. I found it very difficult to gain the correct moisture level with much success.
Perhaps the more gutsy growers can or should be over potted to avoid root disturbance.
My wild warrior was over potted and has done very well and bloomed.
