Default Dendrobium lindleyi--"winter rest" off to a slow start!

Hi all,

I don't exactly have a question to post here; I guess this post instead falls into the category of "hope I did the right thing."

I have a Dendrobium lindleyi that will be spending its first winter with me soon. I have read a lot of info about them from very helpful folks, and as far as I can tell I *should* have begun restricting its water over a month ago. However, just as I began to do so, it suddenly put forth a flush of new growth (we're talking 4 new pseudobulbs, basically all at once). So, I kept watering it as usual (no fertilizer, though). So...now that it's new growths look mature-ish, I'm planning on beginning a pretty severe winter rest for it. Any comments or suggestions? Did I do the right thing?

Also, I hear these like to be kept very cool in the winter. I grow within my home, but on windowsills right next to the cold glass--does this sound like a successful spot for the lindleyi?

Thanks!
Claire

Claire, Sounds to me as though you're doing the right thing. My lindleyi is resting now (just two weeks) and my room doesn't get below 60 deg. at night if I can help it because of the other plants I'm growing. Just cross your fingers for next year's bloom!

Ours is currently in winter rest too. I just found out that these don't like repotting or remounting. We remounted ours just after purchase 1 1/2 yrs ago so the next bloom cycle should be much better than last year.

It gets a small spritz every other week.

Thank you all so much! I appreciate the info about them not liking repotting, shadytrake; I shouldn't need to for at least another year since I repotted it this summer. And, my growing room is probably similar to yours, Shirley, so I hope we both get good results with the temps we have! Here's hoping a couple months of benign neglect pays off because I really hope I get to see it bloom this spring...LOVE your photo, Gin.

Figured I'd follow up to this thread, since my lindleyi made it through the winter just fine and actually bloomed for me this spring!

Well, I'm happy to say that this year's blooming is one of the best I've ever had. Unfortunately the plant is getting much too large to handle easily in my situation and the wooden basket is rotting and falling apart so I will have to do a major overhaul, dividing, etc.

Shirley, that's amazing! It looks like that orchid has absolutely exploded with flowers. Again, good growing!
