New pot - Is it too big?
Hello
I am repoting a phalaenopsis with few roots in semi-hydro. Is the pot ok or too big? The hight is 13 cm / 5 in.
Thanks
Luiza

That pot is a bit too large for your plant, but with s/h it doesn't seem to be as important as with bark or moss.

That's a great looking pot, Luiza, where did you find it, I'm always on the look out for good pots to use for orchids

Hi Hedge, the pot is from the Tupperware section in Wilkinson - Wilkinson's own brand (£1). It is a microwaveable container made for 0.4L of liquid and it comes with a lid. The walls are pretty thick as I struggled a bit to make the holes.
I have potted already and the end result is a lot heavier than the previous pot so I guess it will not fall so easy now. My first experience with Hydroton is great! It is a lot easier, cleaner and trouble free to repot in comparison to bark.

That's looking good. If you were potting in bark it would have been too big, but with hydroton it should be fine.

I would have gone 1 size smaller in height but as long as you see good new root growth then you should be fine.

Thanks for the info about the pot, Luiza.
Try using an unwanted soldering iron to make holes, but make sure you do so in a well ventilated space as the fumes can be a bit noxious especially if you are asthmatic.

Many orchids will not flower unless their roots are quite confined, and if you pot up into too large a pot there is a danger that the plant will take advantage of the larger space to grow roots in an attempt to spread vegetatively, rather than reproduce itself by flowering and making seeds. As we grow them for flowers, we try to avoid that!
