Laelia anceps rest? Male
Default Laelia anceps rest?

Does laelia anceps need any kind of rest? It's about time if it does need one but I'm not so sure if it wants one, it is in the middle of pumping out two new growths.

I have not been able to figure out a rest period for this species. Mine keeps pumping out new growths. As soon as one is about to mature new ones start forming from its base. Soon I will have L. anceps coming out of my ears.

Laelia anceps Culture Page
Here is a bit of info on them. Doesn't specifically say a rest, but to reduce watering in the winter if it is kept cool.

Anceps does not need a rest period. Actually there is no Cattleya alliance orchid that I would give a 'rest', whatever that means.

Certainly not now in Florida. This is blooming season and is followed by a growth spurt. My blooming plants flowered last week and the ones that do not look like they will flower this year have several new pbulbs on each plant.

In Canada your season could be a couple of months ahead of mine, so consider the area from which you get advice and adjust your thinking accordingly.

Also always consider what was the reason for the advice, like the idea to reduce water when it is cool.

Moisture on the leaves and cool temperatures encourage Pythion fungus. Rather than restrict water be sure to water early so the leaves dry before temperatures drop in the night.

I will water mine 2-3 times a week all winter. I also use well water to keep my plants warm on cold nights. I will turn on the sprinklers and run them 12 hours until it warms again. The anceps accept this just fine as do all the other orchids.

Not to my knowledge. Mine grow year round: either putting out new growths or new roots.

I do, however, water less when it's cold. BTW, I leave them out when it's 20-30 degrees.
