Cat who broke my dendrobium orchid stalk, please help
Default Cat who broke my dendrobium orchid stalk, please help

Two nights ago I decided to stray away from my normal Phal orchids and I bought me a Dendrobium orchid. I thought, why not. So far, my Phals have been doing good, lets try another. So what's my fiance do? He has to separate one of our cat's from the others and he sticks him in the office, which is where I have my orchids. And the cat goes after my brand new Dendrobium. We come back in the room, pot's on the floor, the whole plant is out of the pot, roots and all. My fiance repots it before I know anything is going on, which he did a good job. I vacuum up the mess and go on to work for the day. Tonight I come home and check on the plant and find that it was damaged and now I don't know what to do. The plant has one tall stalk that is in bloom and 2 smaller stalks that are not in bloom. The stalk with the blooms is broken almost in half and is barely hanging on. (My lovely fiance didn't have the heart to tell me and hid the break underneath one of the clips that clips the stalk to the support stick) The flowers have already, in less that 12 hours started to droop and wilt from the damaging break. The break is about 2 inches about the top set of leaves. What should I do? Please help.

I would cut the broken stalk completely and get into a vase of water. Hopefully you can still enjoy the blooms. If the other stalks are intact and your fiance did a good job of re-potting it, the plant should live and hopefully the 2 smaller stalks will bloom at some time for you. It is so heart-breaking when things like that happen. We have 3 cats and when the brattiest one was young, he knocked over several Paphs (and everything else in the room) that I had on a table in our living room window at least 3 times! They survived but needed re-potting every time. Good luck with it and enjoy the blooms in the meantime.

is it the spike (inflorescence), or a cane (pbulb) that broke?

Dendrobiums sometimes will send out roots at the nodes of broken canes. If you want to try to multipy your plants you could just lay the broken cane on slightly damp bark and wait until it either dries up or sends out roots. I have done this and gotten several plants from a single broken cane. It is a SLOW process, but we all have plenty of time, right?

Or you could just enjoy the blooms like suggested and put it in water. Once you do that it will probably get waterlogged and I doubt it will root.

Maybe somebody else has other experiences?
