Mystacidium capense -
Hi,
I'm new here, & living in Newcastle, Australia ( about 32deg South and on the coast ), I'm short on space and grow the few plants I have as garden plants - either potted or mounted on Plumeria ( frangipani ) trees or palms. The climate is frost free and temps range from about an overnight winter min of 7 deg to a day summer max of, up to, 45 deg. Humidity ranges from very high to extremely dry ( both hot and cold ... this is often accompanied by wind ) sorry, that cold is by local standards...I realise in the U.S. cold can have a completely different dimension. I gather that the local temp is a range across the cool to, lower end, intermedeate.
At present I have growing and flowering well in the garden several oncidium, non-phalanthe native and soft cane Dendrobium, Brassocattleya,Cymbidium, Epidendrum & Brassia plus an odd assortment of things.
Main problem is pests eating the long awaited for flower spikes off before I get to appreciate the flowers.
That was a bit long winded...sorry. Well here's the point. I recently acquired a small Vandaceous/ Sarcanthinae? plant labelled Mystacidium capense, it has about 5 leaves the largest of which is about 4cm/1&1/4". It is now rapidly developing a flower spike. I was hoping for a slightly larger plant to put out into the garden. Also my research indicates it requires quite heavy shade to prosper. Can anyone who has grown, or is, growing this let me know what size plant I can eventually expect and just what light level would be ok before it becomes detremental.
Thanks Ron
