Anything will work if you water it right. Ages and ages past i wrote an article for the Orchids magazine (I think it was still the 'Bulletin' then) about growing orchids in peat based mixes. Pretty much the same thing as a soilless mix you'd grow houseplants in, really. And that works too, if you water it right.
I think the denser mixes work best in areas that don't have dark cold winters. For where I live, I am using a pretty traditional bark based mix without fine peat. Sometimes I add chunky peat. Really if you have more than a few orchids, it is probably best to buy a specialty mix made for orchids, by somebody who grows them, preferrably. Call your local orchid nursery, I'm sure they'd sell you a bit. Might even give you some. Or make your own (you'll save money too). There are lots of supply places on the internet.
I grow a whole lot of bromeliads in a mix of ~70% potting soil and ~30% seedling bark... I bet the miracle grow mix would be great for broms.
