"Roots"
I am pretty new to raising orchids. A few of my orchids have "roots" growing out from the base of the plant -- into the air. Is this a healthy sign or not? Should I trim them off?

Do not trim them off. They are aerial roots and are natural. Welcome to the wonderful addiction of orchids!!

Welcome to the Orchid Board. I love the roots they are so interesting, be careful you don't bump them. I grow vandas just to watch the roots, the turns and twists.
You'll soon have bunches, this orchid business is addicting. Enjoy!!!.

Hi and welcome - lots of aerials means a happy plant. If you haven't got very high humidity where you are, they'll probably enjoy a fine spray mist every once and a while Just remember not to go too overboard and get lots of standing water on the actual plant.
Happy Growing

I have 2 phals in my collection that have aerial roots galore. I've got pretty decent humidity in my growing room (50-60%), but I still mist them most days just to keep them plump.
Definitely do not cut them off, and do be mindful not to bump them. They can break/snap off pretty easily.
Welcome to OB!
P.S. Wow, val_and_graham, those are very healthy looking roots. From what I can see in the picture, you have a very happy phal!
