Pigmentation on phal
Default Pigmentation on phal

Is this normal or sign of pest/disease?

this is a normal sign of TOO MUCH sun! (unless you have one very vinivolored Hybrid, which normally has reddish leaves)

Disagree with the too much sun comment. I usually get bleaching (yellow to white) with too much sun / sunburn.

I've always heard that reddish coloration on phals can happen with high light but not too much light. I actually like a reddish tint to the leaves, and try to move phals into slightly higher light until they show this.

There may be something else going on, because the leaf texture looks a little "leathery". It might be that the higher metabolism needs more water to compensate for the high light.

I would agree with BOTH of the posts above. It's probably getting more than optimal light, but not enough to actually burn the leaves. These light levels are causing the red pigmentation and the plant is probably tranpiring moisture out faster than it is taking it in.
In the longer term, this can lead to slow and/or stunted growth. A little less sun should do the trick - the plant looks very strong and healthy, otherwise!

ok, I was not talking about roasting the plant under the sun, but I assume this plant is nort growing under light bulbs, as they seem to be growing "outdoors"..light comes from teh sun, therefore too much sun

but yes, you are right, probably I should have been more specific to avoid misunderstandings...

Thank you all. The sun changed direction again and they've been getting too much sun I guess. Need to get some cloth.

It's been start stop for these poor phals. First it was too wet, then they get scorched and when i think i find the right spot, the sun changes direction...
