You can grow pretty much any orchid in any fashion - IF you can adjust the other cultural requirements to meet their needs.

For example, I have a vanda that is suspended by a wire - no container or medium whatsoever. I am quite certain phals can be grown that way too (although I'd hate to have to keep up with that watering regimen).

thanks ray! fim doing an educational exhibit for the OS show on phals and different ways to grow them. but im just choosing the main ones. any other main ones you can think of?

I am growing mine in partial s/h?, I'm using a clay pot, with a shallow saucer, that I keep a little water in the bottom of, the water wicks up the hydroton and keeps it moist but not wet. Seems to be ideal. Keeps leaves and crown dry too. I only refill the saucer. A couple are in bark chip I refill the saucer once a week. I copied the idea from one of our Florida members.

good idea, you might want to think about rinsing out the whole pot once in a while, just to keep everything fresh in there
