You can grow pretty much any orchid in any fashion - IF you can adjust the other cultural requirements to meet their needs.
For example, I have a vanda that is suspended by a wire - no container or medium whatsoever. I am quite certain phals can be grown that way too (although I'd hate to have to keep up with that watering regimen).

I am growing mine in partial s/h?, I'm using a clay pot, with a shallow saucer, that I keep a little water in the bottom of, the water wicks up the hydroton and keeps it moist but not wet. Seems to be ideal. Keeps leaves and crown dry too. I only refill the saucer. A couple are in bark chip I refill the saucer once a week. I copied the idea from one of our Florida members.
