Dedrobium Petals changed color
Default Dedrobium Petals changed color

Hey Guys!!!

It's only been 3 weeks since I got my first orchid. When I first bought my Dendrobium, the petals were yellow and the lip is purple. At the 3rd week, the petals have now turned Greenish in color. I haven't fertilized the plant yet and I know I should be fertilizing it. Could this be the reason why the petals have changed color?
I placed the orchid close to a window. It does not get direct sunlight but it does get quite a bit of light in the area. Perhaps too much light? I water my plant about once a week. I do have water softener installed in my house. I also wonder if this has anything to do with the petals changing color.
All the flowers in the stem have bloomed and one by one, the flowers are dying off already which I think is normal. Can anyone shed some light on this? Thank you in advance!

Here are the pictures of the before and after. The first pic is the before.... The last two are pics of what it looks like now.

I suspect you may have 1 oncidium and 2 different hybrid dendrobium growing in the same vessel. The dendrobium spray on the left looks consistant in color and so does the one on the right, so there might be 2 dends. instead of one. Do you have any photos depicting both sprays before or during the color change?

Junebug is correct, it looks like you might have three different plants in there- two dens and one onc from what I can tell.

But more importantly, DO NOT WATER WITH SOFTENED WATER!!!!!! Yours might be okay- I don't know how your water softener system works, but if it is the type where you add softening salts, they are harmful to plants.

Many flowers change color a bit with age, I'd say there's nothing to worry about.

Thanks for the reply and feedback! Yes, I have 3 diff pots in one pot. The three diff potted plants are in the one big pot but they are not seated all the way to the bottom if the planter. So theres a bit of water in the bottom end for humidity. The water is not touching any of the orchid roots. I was just worried about the color of my petals on both dendrobiums. They aren't yellow anymore. The first picture when I first brought them home was yellow and now, it's greenish in color. Should I worry? I'll definitely stop feeding using water softener.

Many orchids will change color as the flower ages. As far as using softened water on orchids, this is never a good idea. The salts used to soften the water are toxic to plants.
