Dendrobium questions - Orchid Board

I have some dendrobiums (phal type) that lost all its leaves due to too much sun. How long does it take for a new lead to grow if the roots are ok? Should i reduce water in the mean time?

Another dendro has a new lead growing at the edge of the pot, should i repot it now or should i wait till the new lead starts sprouting roots?

I'm no expert, but I think if you can raise the humidity or even give it the bag treatment, it should come back in time. I don't know how long it would take though, depends on the vigor of the plant.

As for re-potting, I usually don't repot unless the mix is getting bad or the plant is nearly root bound. If it hasn't been re-potted in awhile, I'd do it now so the roots can acclimate to their new pot.

If it's growing season and the roots are healthy it shouldn't take long for new growths to begin showing up at the base of previous canes. They can grow to maturity within a few months.

If it's approaching winter your plant will probably hold off on new growth until next spring.

A friendly word of caution...don't trim or remove the leafless canes because they provide an important reserve of energy for the plant. They should remain with the plant until they are completely shriveled and yellow/brown in color.

Thank you. There's no winter here. Should i keep it on the dry side before the lead emerges? It's been raining everyday.

dends like to dry out completely before watering again....even tho it has no leaves it will be fine, just leave it be.....it will send out new growth as it pleases, it might send out keikis too, so just keep an eye on it....if it is raining every day the humidity should be fine for it....you dont say where you are in the world....on the plant with the new growth, i would let it be also, they like being jammed up in a small pot, just put that pot inside a bigger clay pot for stability and let it go.....gl and enjoy!

I had this new growth on my Dend for about 3 weeks now and this is how much it progressed. I thought the Dends liked a lot of sun? because I keep mine in as much sun as possiable, even moving from window to window as the day goes on.

dens like sun, but must be acclimated slowly. it also depends on the plant

Hi Jeffery,

They grow much slower as the temperature falls. It's possible that your new cane will stall during fall and winter and resume growth when the weather warms next Spring. It looks very healthy.

I put them with my bellina & catt and the dendros were the only ones that got fried.

I read later that the antelope variety is the type that can take strong sun.

My plants live in an average house temp of about 74F, they do get good sun still, though I have now moved them out of the East window and have put them in a South window, most the time anyways, between East and South they get about 9 hours of good sun a day and I made a mistake on the new growth on the plant, I seen this yesterday.
