I don't know if boiling or brewing tobacco is a good idea. Tobacco is the one that is a risk for viral infection.

Brewing and boiling coffee is fine. Coffee also shouldn't introduce TMV.

The sugar is fine if you want to drink it.

But for getting rid of snails on orchids or in the potting media as per stefpix's instructions, I wouldn't add sugar to the coffee. Ants will flock to your orchids.

Probably sugar would also ferment. I would probably just dilute 50% coffee or use used ground coffee and rebrew it. I do not think it has to be that strong.

I wonder if adding a drop or 2 of dishwasher would be good to kill bugs in the medium before bringing plants back inside

I use full strength instant coffee and it seems to drive the slugs out. I leave the pot standing in it for about 15min and then run plain water through afterwards.

Found slugs crawling out during the soak and I've seen no sign of them since.

Thanks Rosie, I would much rather use something like coffee than some nasty toxic chemical that is dangerous to my pets and grandchildren! But I must admit, they aren't going to get my gourmet coffee
