As for the leaving or cutting the spike, if it only has a couple of good roots left I would deffinately cut it.

I think Paul was refering to a root stimulator such as Dyna-Gro K-L-N or Superthrive.

I think Paul was referring to Dyna-Grow Pro-TeKt. You can buy it online. I have not used it. The following link is an example:
Dyna-Gro Pro-TeKt (0-0-3) (Fertilizer & Nutrients)

I'm a novice, so there are many more experienced people here to advise you, but I'd wait until the pencil came out almost dry before watering again. If it's really wet, you can take it out of the pot to help it dry off more quickly. You can then check the roots to see how they are doing.

Good luck! Keep asking questions.

Actually, the Dyna-Gro ProTekT is a silicone solution. It may be a root stimulator of some sort as it does work with the roots. However, it works to strengthen the entire plant. I have saved 4 orchids in the past year with it. It is incredible! Also, when orchids are in trouble it is generally a good idea to decrease their light a bit so they spend more time repairing as opposed to processing light. The combo of somewhat reduced light and the dyna-gro has worked miracles.

You can buy it online. You might try an orchid supply store online, or Amazon. I believe I bought mine on Amazon, but the shipping was something crazy for it, lol...

Best of luck!

Oops, I just realized I said silicone. I meant silicon. Silicone would kill your orchid, lol...
