Look familiar?

Pests and Diseases

I'd post pics of my own, of a Masdevallia that follows your description, but there are issues with that right now.

id post pictures of my own too but i never thought of taking any. but yes that looks almost exactly like it. it was inbetween some other orchids and theyre just fine. it was touching with a zygopetalum and its still growing nicely, but its happened various times now and only with the cool growers. maybe i keep them too wet? although idk how because they dry in a couple of days. either way the infections enveloped whole plants in a matter of days and they were lost. hmmm. im gonna pick up another milt and keep track of it. i wanna see whats up.

and now that i think of it, i did notice that strange spicy smell to the plant. i though it was just natural or something and the patches of brown showed up as almost perfect circles then spread which is why i kind of thought it was an infection but i scraped the idea when the grower assured to me that the plant couldnt grow above 75 or so and that i stressed it too much. tch >:/ i prolly got sold an already sickly plant

There, pics of both a cool grower and an intermediate to warm grower.

It's not a temperature related problem.

Erwinia is responsible for the markings.

The infections were most likely due to very small open wounds.

oh, most likely. the package it came in was a little dented. despite very much stickering from the grower. so where did the infection come from? is the bacteria in the air or did the plant just come in contact with something in the house? actually, i just did surgery with 2 of one of my phals largest leaves because it started getting that tan marking and i suspected it was pseudomonas. i just prevented by cutting off the whole leaf before it got too bad. will a systemic antibacterial work? if that even exists?

Check for it first.

Use antibacterial soap water. Dip the entire plant in it for just 5 to 15 minutes.

Most of the damage will show up almost immediately if any.

Good air circulation is a preventative measure. As is cleanliness.

Other than that, don't drop your plants? Idk...

As I mentioned earlier, this disease may have some resistance to certain medications.

I really don't know if there's a quick and easy cure for this problem.

After going through hell, I ended up losing Chondrorhyncha hirtzii, Chondroscaphe chestertonii, and Kefersteinia lojae to this problem only days after purchase.

Luckily the Masdevallia in the pic has stopped showing signs of further disintegration.

There was another Masdevallia that I luckily caught the problem to, relatively early and managed to save it too.

that sounds very like a good idea. im gonna prepare this time. i might use isopropyl too. one time a lady at homedepot (strange that she was so knowledgable on orchids) recommended spraying the plants with soapy water evry once in a while to prevent disease and kill bugs. i was just concerned that it might harm the plants but if the "KING of orchid growing" does it, it must be ok
