Default tiny, shiny brown bugs

Help! I'm worried that my miniature phal is under attack!

I noticed that there are super tiny, shiny brown/amber bugs "running" all around it and hanging out where the roots join the base of the plant. I haven't noticed any damage to the plant, but I'm worried that these little buggers might harm my darling. I'd take a picture, but they're too small. they're about the size of a period ( . ) or smaller and they move around fairly slowly (I'm sure they think they're running, but they're too small to go very far quickly) and they don't jump at all. There is also no webbing under my orchid leaves like with spider mites. I've smashed a few of them (very easy) and they smell like cedar sap or pine sol.
Anyone know what they are? are they harmful? If so, how do I get rid of them?

Background: my phal is planted on a board (yes, an actual board, a 2x4) with some spag. moss. It seems very happy, has grown 6 leaves and a dozen roots in a year. I was going to move it to some bark, but when I tried to transfer it after 3 weeks, it was stuck.

Thanks for helping me!

Springtails?

Look up Google images and type in "springtails" in the search box and see if any of them look like your bugs.

Without a picture, it's hard to tell.

If you got a microscope you can take photos of the thing through the lens.

An endoscope takes pictures while magnifying too. Pictures will not be very high res though, but it's not bad.

it looks like they might be springtails - I poked one with a tiny needle and it jumped. They're quite round, though, and the springtail pictures look more elongated. If they are springtails, will they hurt my orchid? And how can I get rid of them? Google recommended drying them out - can I do this without damaging my orchid?

If they're springtails, they're harmless.
