i have some orchids that i got about two weeks ago... i noticed something white growing in the mix, i smelled it and it smelled moldy. so i decided to repot with new mix.

i dipped the roots in a mix of water and peroxide, then i cut out most of the dead roots.

what should i do next. thanks

Hi jhombre, welcome to OB!

Though you don't say so, I'm assuming that after cutting the dead roots off, you repotted your plant into new mix. Is that the case?

If so, your next step is to just try to properly care for your orchid: learn how often to water, fertilize, etc. What type of medium did you repot with?

Sounds like you're on the right track so far!

Ok then, a couple more questions for you:

-Do you know what kind of orchid this is? If you can upload a photo of it, OB members can usually narrow it down to a certain genus. Different types of orchids require different care, so knowing this about your orchid will help determine your next steps.

-Since you said it got soaked in the rain, are you growing your orchid outside? Either way, what type of elements is it exposed to? Like full sun, shade, rain, what temps, etc.

Welcome to the forum.

There are two good shows coming to South Florida next month.

Fairchild Botanical Gardens in Coral Gabes the 12-14 of November and the American Orchid Society in Del Ray the following weekend the 19-21. If you come to either stop by and say hello to me. We are there under the corporate name Pelican Coast Farms.

The white you saw is 'snow mold' it is an indication of potting medium that is too old and decaying fast. Re-potting is the right course of action and now patience.
