i pulled the sheers back. i dug into the plant and cut away some of the rotten part. the inside of the plant looks okay...the outside layer is the bad part. I put rubbing alcohol on the rotten part to try to dry it out. It seems to be drying. I am going to dig at it a little bit more today and see what happens. I also pulled it out of its pot and put it in a plastic bag with a wet papertowel in the bottom. I made sure it isn't touching the remaining half alive root. I watered the root a few times...I know it is drying out each time because it doesn't have anything sitting next to it. Other than that I am just going to wait to see what happens. Hopefully the little nub of a root will grow some more.

You can also use hydrogen peroxide, straight from the bottle.

You can also leave the plant out of the plastic bag completely. Put it in an empty pot and don't water til the bad part is dry.

yea i am going to try the peroxide tomorrow. because it seems to be spreading to the part that i just cut away...either that or i didn't cut it away good enough. I actually did just pull it out of the bag. I figured it could dry out over night. If it gets no water then will the black stop? It can't survive without water right? What do I do about the three inch black stick on the bottom of the plant that is now black with chopped off roots? Do I just leave it there?

Are you referring to the old "neck"? Phals eventually develop this neck as the bottom leaves die and the top crown continues to grow. This neck can be trimmed back. Be sure to coat the cut with cinnamon.

I will post a picture of what it looks like. I am honestly not sure what it is. This is my first orchid. All I know is that it was growing fuzzy white mold on it..which I figured wasn't a good sign. I drenched the mold in alcohol.
