New Nelly Isler Growths?

Hi,

I have been on here before when I had my first Nelly Isler... sadly it didn't make it and it died a death a few months back.

However, I now have Nelly number 2 and she seems to be doing a lot better (i.e. she is still alive!!). She has finished flowering but is still nice and green and the biggest PB is still looking healthy (as is the smaller one). I water it usually when the PB starts to get too wrinkled and it plumps out nicely by the next morning.

I have now noticed 2 new growths but I'm not really sure what they are. Spikes or new leaves? And was wondering if anyone could give me a little advice?

I think that at least the one in the fold of the leaves is a new growth, probably the other one as well. It's difficult to tell without being to enlarge the picture but that's what it looks like to me.

On mine they started out thin like that but then started to fatten as each new leaf appeared.

i dont know, i think they look kind of like spikes. because they have that mitten-thing. but rosie is much mroe experienced than me...

Yep, that's a spike between the leaves- well done!! the new growth below the leaves is probably a new pseudobulb.

Your so lucky yours is growing! Lol Mine lost its roots and the p-bulbs look gross and wrinkly but when I re-pottted i saw some new growth but they didn't look like that.........keep us posted! What are your growing conditions maybe i can make mine happy...?

I think it looks like new growth ... but hopefully the others are right and it's a spike

I'll be interested to see what they turn out to be. to me they look the same so would be both new growth or two spikes. Don't the spikes usually appear closer in to the PB?

yes they do usually come up next to the pbulb - and spikes at this early stage of growth don't usually have that double points on the end, which makes me think yours is new growth. Right now I have a Miltonia has growths that look like yours - and one is coming up right next to the pbulb, but I am still leaning towards new growth -
but - maybe I'm wrong ...

As for growing conditions, I am a complete orchid newbie and my first orchid (another Nelly Isler) died within a few months of me having it :-( So this one I have basically left alone. It's in the same pot/mix that it was bought in and it sits on my window ledge in my office at work. I water it when the pbulb gets all wrinkly - about once every 5 days or so. I've basically treated it like your average houseplant and it seems to have responded quite well to that...

I do love the flowers on Nelly though, they really are beautiful - I hope I get to see them again!!
