Ok, I am insane. We have a small home with 5 of us living there. I had about 50 orchids........until yesterday. I just got about 30 more in the mail. I have dealt with this vendor before and I thought I was ordering mainly small plants that I intended to sneak in amongst the ones here already. You see, I have been told that I am to buy NO MORE. Well, he must have decided to do me a favor and sent me almost nothing under 2 feet tall. I am so dead. But, I did get a bunch of very healthy looking plants!! Anyone else do this?

Looks like you get to spend the winter outdoors. You surely won't make your 70 orchids brave the arctic temperatures you get up there.

I have never bought 30 at at time. I have learned I need to stagger them coming in so my husband doesn't notice a sudden change in the amount of chids in my growing area. I even hang them off the back of the orchid bench so you can't see them all at once. There are even some now in the shrubs and tree branches.

Of course I am about the break the 200 mark so the idea of having just 80 doesn't sound so bad to me!

If my husband does notice I make sure he knows how much money I saved....saved being the key word here...by purchasing my orchids from whichever vendor just sent them. I ask him how much he thinks the orchid cost and then correct him with the "actual" cost which always ends up being at least half of what he said.

Tell him you got all 30 from an estate sale and they were 5 bucks a pop...lol.

I am such a terrible enabler.

Shann~

I know the feeling. My greenhouse is getting ever fuller, seedlings are growing bigger, and I am running out of creative ideas to make more space.

Welcome to the club...

Love this thread! I have to do do the "hide" game with new 'chids that come in the mail. My roommate suggested I start cutting back last year after orchids started taking over the dining room. I did in fact go from two growing shelves down to one, but of course that hasn't stopped me from getting more plants. So, now I check the priority mail or FedEx tracking numbers and make sure I'm there to intercept the mail first when something is due to arrive. Then I'll take the package and stash it behind a shelf until he leaves.

It is no better regardless of how much space you have. I am constantly out of space, even with three greenhouses and 5 acres. My wife's rules are a little different - no orchids not in bloom in the house or pool area.

I put up a new 70 foot greenhouse each of the last 2years and when finances did not allow one this year I am crowded. It is just I have 10,000 and can not find the space for another 3000. Which I probably will buy anyway.

Still that is what still makes this a fun job not just work.

Oh no Jonada now you're in trouble! At least you have some nice orchids out of it. I bet the vendor was so pleased with your big order that they decided to give you the best

Hope you manage to sneak them in anyway!

eeryone plays the hiding game, including me. sometimes, i will buy it as a "gift" for my mom. and since she isnt plant savvy, after it goes out of bloom, its mine

I don't even have to buy them myself - my mother in law has donated all her Noid's to me after they went out of flower and my father in law even found one by their bin area that someone had outed because the flowers had faded - there was absolutely nothing wrong with it, even though it was planted in sphagnum, which usually causes non orchid lovers to over water
