Dendrobium Phala Growing Conditions Compatible? Male
Default Dendrobium Phala Growing Conditions Compatible?

I have been enjoying success growing some phalas on a wicker stand in an east facing glass screen door window. I have the opportunity to buy a dendrobium. Are the care and requirement conditions such that placing them in the same situation will be conducive to successful growth? Or should I go with another phala?

There is more than one type of Dendrobium. I grow the non-deciduous phal type. This type will grow with eastern exposure, but the canes will most likely sprawl out in source of more sunlight. Eventually you'll have a plant with long, outstretched, curved canes that will bloom, but only on rare occassions. The phal type prefer brighter lighting conditions. The proper lighting will ensure healthier upright growth with more spikes, buds, and blooms.

I grow the phal-type Dendrobiums, too, plus a Dendrobium lindleyi. All receive the amount of sunlight (direct sun til early afternoon) that would burn a Phal away to a fare-thee-well. (This is even more sun than my Cattleyas get). I'm sure they'd survive under Phal conditions, but they probably would not bloom.

As said above, if it's a phal type Den then it can be grown in the same conditions as Phals, except that to bloom they like more light. I've grown one where I've kept it in Phal light most of the year and just moved it to higher light (moving it in stages) during August. It's flowered for me twice this way, although I've since moved it to a new permenant higher light spot.
