Default Bellopatalum/Zygopetalum care

I am surely crazy as I just doubled my orchid collection size this year already - but as any good orchid hoarder would do I bought another, lol...

However, I am confused. The tag calls the plant a Bellopatalum, yet when searching for culture sheets all I could find is Zygopetalum. What is the difference if any? I understand that some Zygopetalum's are very difficult to flower, yet many companies are trying to make it easier by cross breeding. Is this what I have?

The tag says Bellopatalum Midnight Blue.

My other question is how do I care for these? What potting medium is best for them (would an oncidium potting medium or Miracle-Gro's Orchid Potting Mix work)? I have not found much helpful information online about this little beauty and want to be make sure I don't kill it before it flowers, lol...

The correct spelling is Bollopetalum. It is the cross Bollea violacea x (Zygopetelum Blackii x Zygopetelum mackayi)

If you google that you'll probably find it.

I have one and find it to be an easy grower. It blooms regularly (in bud now).

I understand they like a very fast draining medium and don't like to dry out.
Mine is in S/H. It can take high temps but seems happiest in the 80-90 range. I give it as much light as I can without too much heat.

Hope this helps
Maureen

It does help tremendously! Thank you. My only problem is I don't know how to do S/H.

You don't have to do S/H. A good bark mix would work just as well.
I would think something like bark with LECA or perlite or charcoal to improve drainage.

Whatever will drain fast and not stay soggy.

Oh man, you gotta look into S/H! I have a mild obsession with Zygo's, and they just LOVE S/H! Keep it warm, they can tolerate low to medium light levels (some like brighter light), and lots of water. I think that's why they love the S/H so much. I'd have to say my Phal's and my Zygo's do best in S/H...
