The tsiku marguerite I got sits in a moss and bark type of medium (more moss than barks,) should I worry about it will hold too much moisture? Also, I put the plant on the window facing south, so it gets all the afternoon sun. I also put on a plastic sheet to filter out the direct sunlight, is this right?
Welcome to the Orchid Board! I changed all my orchids out of moss, I think it holds too much moisture, I like my oncidiums in hydroton outside, , also have some in fern bark inside. The fine roots like fir bark.
Don't know where you live so can't tell how much sun you are getting in the afternoon. I have mine in a shadehouse in Florida getting dappled sunlight all day, but full sun mornings only.
Check out AOS website, they have a good care sheet on oncidiums.
I live in PA, near Phily. The south window will get full sun from 1-2PM until 6PM, please check out the plastic sheet I am using and let me know if it would be still too bright for my orchid.
Well to tell you the truth, I am like 6 days new to growing orchid so I have no idea if this is too much or too little sun.
I have a Phal. I put it on the east window that will get morning sun since the instruction came with it told me moderate sunlight. Oh well... I don't know if that's ok either.
Phal sounds ok, they don't need direct sun, the leaves burn too easy.
If you are new to orchid growing, most orchids die from too much water, just be sure your media is only moist and not wet. That's where the problems with moss are. When the flowering has stopped you need to think about getting them into fresh media, bark would be good. Also gives you a chance to look at the roots. Using bark I think would be not near the problems. Others from PA will chime in and let you know what they re doing.
