Best smelling orchid for Phal conditions?
Hey all,
I am looking to increase my small collection. I am growing some very good phals and am doing ok with dens, though I think I may have set them back when I repotted them.
I really want a fragrant orchid. I know I can give it the perfect conditions for Phal.
Is there a particular orchid or type that I should consider?
I am not picky about needing it to be big or small or any color, though small would be nice as it would then be able to live on the shelves my husband will be building in the kitchen window so they can get the light from both the window and the skylight in there.
Thanks!

I cross with phal bellina or phal violacea should be fragrant. Phal amboinensis is supposed to be fragrant too. I have a Phal Princess Kaiulani (violacea x amboinensis), which I expect to be fragrant.
Neofinetia falcata

Sederia japonica grows in phal conditions, but might prefer a bit more light. Some say its lemony, but i think mine smelled like fruit loops. They even look a lot like a phal when not in bloom. Sedirea is Aerides spelled backwards.
Dendrochilums like phal conditions, and some are small if space is an issue. I have a Dendrochilum wenzellii that is like a small clump of grass. Out of normal blooming season though. Try cobbianum also.
Phal Bellina (violacea) is fragrant and small.
Oncidium 'Twinkle' (ornithorhynchum x cheriophorum) is very fragrant and can bloom more than once a year.
Maxillaria tenuifolia smells like coconut. Small clumping pseudobulb plant. A must for any collection.
Some coelogynes and my favorites...Aerangis.
That should fill the windowsill nicely.

My Phal schilleriana var. purpurea is in bloom and it is not fragrant ...time to buy another one. Hey I'm not a phal expert in taxonomy, but is there a scientific discription of var. purpurea or is it just made up for horticultural reasons

Nice scent
I recently purchases a Maxillaria rufescens, it smells like vanilla and I don't think it needs much light.

Hmm
One that I have on my wish list is a very colorful and lightly fragrant Phal Brother Sarah Gold Sunset 'Sogo'. It's a compact phal with a smaller flower.
I saw it at the Orchid Show in NYC and regretted not picking one up then!
Again, I would like to recommend bc Little Stars x Maikai 'Hawaii' -it's fragrance is one I love. As the blossom ages, it turns color! It is an easy grower, profuse bloomer and only needs just a little bit more light than phals
See photos in next post.

Aerangis fastuosa stays small and has a very pleasant strong fragrance. One of my favourite flower fragrances. It grows well under very low light but requires humidity and temperatures slightly higher than the average home. Simple and elegant flowers too.
Some of the shade-loving Angraecums also have a strong spicy fragrance that can fill a room at night - they're easy to grow but stay away from terete-leaved Angraecums like scottianum, which aren't really shade plants, unless you can provide a little more light (not much) than your Phalaenopsis conditions.
