Hi Linda,

I think you can mount orchids to just about anything as long as the surfaces are not toxic to them. It also helps a good deal if you have a heavy hand when watering. Mounted orchids tend to dry out faster. I would imagine lava rocks would dry out even faster (all the holes). I don't see a problem using it for mounting. I've seen people use it as potting mix so think it would be ok.
