I have done it both ways but from what I am seeing with yours, there is plenty of stem to just take off the baby, no different than grafting a plant by taking off a triangle cutting. I would take cinnamon and sprinkle it around/in the wound to prevent bacteria.

It will be hard to determine the type of dendrobium by name, it's obvious to me that it's a NOID meaning "No ID".

You can cut off one of the long stems or canes with sharp, clean pruners. With a sharp, sterile knife, cut sections of the cane so that each section contains a least two nodes (where the leaves use to be).

Lay horizontally, half buried on a bed of damp sand or sphagnum moss in a shallow container.

Cover the container with glass or plastic wrap to hold to the moisture.

Place the container in a warm 70-75 degree area where it will get diffused but not direct sunlight.

I don't think i'll throw him away right now, I still have a couple more pups on the stem and if it's going to give me more babies then I think, I'll let him give me babies.
And I'm not the one to throw out any plant . exspecial when there so much green and health texture to it. I 'll hold on to it and let it do it's thing. But thanks for the advice.

Also I've recently purchased a angraecom superpum, He's in a 2 inch pot with moss it . What is the right care for him. (he's only a baby)
Also I was over at a friends house and she had in her corner a orchid that was brown, dried up and hung over the pot. So I toke it out of the mix ans exspected it and found deep it the roots a little green with 1 or 2 roots on it. So I ask her if I could have it and of course she said yes and I cut it out carefully and brought it home and put in a 2 inch pot with spar. moss and every day he's a little greener and popping up out of the moss. So I don't know what or if it's going to live But I will let everyone know.

Hi Linda,

I think you can mount orchids to just about anything as long as the surfaces are not toxic to them. It also helps a good deal if you have a heavy hand when watering. Mounted orchids tend to dry out faster. I would imagine lava rocks would dry out even faster (all the holes). I don't see a problem using it for mounting. I've seen people use it as potting mix so think it would be ok.
