New oncidium - leaf spots? Female
Default New oncidium - leaf spots?

Hi, since I'm super new I didnt want to post this in diseases in case its normal:

I just got a new oncidium (burr. stefan isler 'lava flow') (from trader joes!! they left the tag in and everything) a couple of days ago. Just yesterday, I noticed that if I look at the leaves from underneath so they're backlit, I can see small spots (all over all the leaves). They're really really subtle (I'm just obsessed enough at the moment to be checking each of my orchids over minutely most days). I tried to get some good pics of them. Normal, or disease??? I'd wait and see but I'm worried about letting any diseases get too far and wipe out my fledgling addiction.
(The first shot shows that you can't really see the spots from the top of the leaves, just the bottom)

What a beauty! Who knew that Trader Joes had such lovely orchids - I'm going to have to pay them a visit.

I'm no onc. expert, however, I do have a few in my collection and I've been able to get them to bloom/rebloom so I'm not unfamiliar with them either.

I've noticed the same thing on a few of my oncs as well. It's more prevalent on the oncs with shorter fatter leaves and on the intergenerics. I've never seen this spread or cause any deleterious affect on the health or vigor of my orchids so I haven't pushed the issue. I don't think it's a symptom of disease, pest or infection - but I will leave it to the onc. experts to chime in.

I would just enjoy the orchid and wouldn't be overly concerned.

Good luck and welcome to the Orchid Board.

Can you believe I only paid $8 for him?? I think that they usually remove the tags from the orchids they sell there, but they must have missed this one. Talk about lucky for me! I've gotten 4 orchids from Trader Joe's so far, and all have actually been really healthy. It's too bad the Cattleya I found there didnt have a tag, its really gorgeous.

I'm really glad to hear that its not a disease or anything harmful!
