bulbophyllum jacobsonii

I have just buy a baby bulbophyllum jacobsonii in German and i do not know really how to take care.

Please can you help me?

Hi Adrianna, welcome to Orchidboard and congratulations on your baby Bulbophyllum! This is a beautiful species that is pretty easy to grow.

The basics of culture are pretty simple: keep it warm, moist, and in fairly bright indirect light. Most Bulbos also like regular light doses of fertilizer. I grow most of mine in sphagnum with styrofoam, LECA, or large perlite added to maintain an open mix.

You may find more information on this species by searching for Bulbophyllum plumatum, a more commonly-used name. Good luck, Adrianna!

Thanks a lot.
Now i found that the Orchid has very little snails, i read that with a piece of apple you can take them???i mean you put the apple and wait until next day and you find them all there in the apple??.

Also i would like to ask if it is better to have the bulbophillum in a flowerpot or on a log ( i read this in a french orchid book).

Sounds like a good idea, you may want to do this for a few days in a row to make sure you get most of them. Snails are bad pests!

This plant should be pretty tolerant of different set-ups as long as you adjust your watering accordingly. The aim is to have fairly constant moisture, so if you put it on a mount (wood, treefern, etc.) make sure you give it a generous 'pad' of sphagnum under the roots and water frequently. These plants naturally grow as epiphytes and they do very well on mounts in culture.

Plants in pots dry out more slowly and will need less frequent watering, but make sure you use a fairly open mix so the roots get air. I usually use open baskets and net pots to allow good root aeration. Good luck, Adrianna!

Dear all,

My new bubophyllum jabosonii or plumatum is having a leaf turning BLACK!!!.

I think that they sold me an orchid in a very bad health...any suggestions?.

Clip the leaf off well below where it's turning black (though don't cut into the pseudobulb unless it's turning black, too). Dust the cut part with some ordinary powdered cinnamon.

Try to increase air movement around the plant to prevent fungal issues. I recently got a flask of seedlings of this species and I suffered about 50% attrition from fungal problems, only alleviated when I increased air movement significantly.

Can you post a picture of your plant? That may help us pinpoint what kind of issue you're having. Good luck!

She is in front of a window so have indirect air and light.
