Thanks everyone but I guess there is never an easy answer. It is Nobile type. Actually says this on the tag. When I bought the plant, spring 2006, it had flowers coming from the sides of the canes not from the top of the cane.
By the looks of the new canes, they are fat, green and healthy looking. Last fall I gave no water and had no flowers. Perhaps this year I will let the reserve go dry but continue to give water when needed. I will keep notes and see if there is anything different. Terminal leafs have been present since July-August. Hence why I would think flowers in spring. This is a good plant that keeps me guessing!

Check this post for a chart of the different types of dens and what their culture requirements are. It's post #170 on page 17 of this thread. And to answer your question, yes Nobile type dens are also called soft cane dens.
