I wen to Lowe's today to find that they had just restocked their orchid inventory. I was overwhelmed. I was instantly drawn to a Bc. Kosh wallis. It was a bag baby, but now it has a good home. I looked at it really good before bought it, and noticed that it had two sheaths(at least I think) and has 3 new growths. The only thing that doesn't look that good is the substrate. Should I repot it? Will repotting hurt the sheaths? Can someone please tell me if the second pic below is a sheath or not, and could someone please post a pic of what it looks like in blooms. Thanks

Hi Chris. Yes those are indeed sheaths! If it were mine I'd repot it just to see what's lurking below. You just never know. It's better to lose a sheath or two than the whole plant.

It should be an interesting bloom. It has lots of Brassovola in it with a splash of guttata and a few others. Might be star shaped with spots.

nice plants hey chris? I must have found the same batch here in town from lowes as I have the same plant and they look pretty good.Always do if you catch em before they start to get mugged by overzealous hired water tenders who water everything globally and mercilessly.. you saved an orchid!!! from certain bagged death!!!

The Lowe's you have in Houston are different than the one in Baytown. There the plants look like they are never watered. I have to soak them when I get them home. I go one of those Bc. Kosh Wallis and it looks good. It, also, has a sheath or two.

Today I went to my local Lowes and got one in a bag. I wanted to get the Bl Yellow Bird [which is almost like a primary hybrid, I prefer to get species], but then I decided for the Bc KW, which seems to be a very complex hybrid. But the one I got had buds and seems to be a lot more vigorous and fast growing than the Bl.Y.B. I wanted to get both but i need to watch my spending and my space available. Maybe the Bc Kosh Wallace needs less light and blooms smaller than the other one. What is your experience? Also I would like to find out the complete genealogy of the Cattleya Caudebec parent that seems a very complex hybrid. I can go back a couple of steps but would like to find all the way to the parent species.

Chris how did you fare? The one I got is similar to yours.

I actually took mine back about two weeks later because I didnt like it as much as I thought. I can't remember if or what I got anything to replace it when I took it back. My most recent purchase is a brassavola little stars that has about 5 new growths and is actively growing. However, my mom just bought a brassocattleya josh wallis. It looks almost like the one I had with a bent growth, but it only has one sheath. I will post a new post tomorrow when I get my new shipment. If it arrives and will include pictures of it along with the b. Little stars

Hey Stefano. C. Caudebec is 50% C. guttata, 12.5% loddigesii, 12.1% C. mossiae, 7.4% C. gaskelliana, 6.3% C. intermedia, 4.7% C. trianae, 3.1% C. labiata, 3.1% C. lueddemanniana, and .8% C. warneri. I'd say it's VERY complex!

I like C. guttata. I have 2 leopoldii seedlings.
I wanted really to get the Bl Yellow Bird because it is simpler (do you think it may require more light to bloom?). But I never seen some growing so many growths so tightly packed and still has the Brassavola look. I thought that it might be a lot more floriferous and faster growing than Bl Yellow Bird.

I found the Kew's site were you can look up parentages but I had no time to draw a diagram. I wonder how they came up with C Penny Kuroda and C Caudebec so complex and yet still not sterile?

I have a Bl. Yellow Bird that I have had for several years. I was almost ready to find it a new home because it would give me only one pathetic bloom once in a while. Last year I gave it the maximum sun I could and lo and behold, this year I got 15 spikes with multiple flowers on each spike. Here is a pic. of it.
