spike? and leaf questions
Hello all i am uploading 2 new pictures of the noid that i wasn't sure if it was growing a root or spike. I think that it is a spike, but what is it doing at the top of it, It doesn't look anything like a mitten? Or do different varieties produce different looking spikes? My next question is my noid started growing a leaf then stopped and started another one..will they both grow, it looks like it's stopped growing. Thankyou all!

One plant is growing a basal keike--congrats.
The second plant with the two new leaves probably had some trauma. They will start growing again if the plant is happy.

I agree, my thought was that the first was growing a basal keike. With the second I think it is possible that both will grow as I've seen that happen, but I agree with Joann that some trauma may have caused the first to stall and it may not get going again.

I agree with my wize friends, the first is a basal keiki. This is good because if you leave it on the mother plant it's possible both will produce flower spikes and you will have a lovely show of blooms.
If the keiki has it's own roots you can remove it and pot it up on it's own when the roots are a few inches long. I don't tend to remove mine as they make for a bigger better looking plant.

Well thankyou all very much first i thought was root , then spike, now it's a keiki. I will be leaving this 1 on the mother, it's a sad i little plant anyway. My husband and kids got it for me for valentine's day, it only had 3 blooms on itwhen i got it lol so it will be a very big nice phals (if) baby does spike 2. Also if it does grow a spike will it be the same colour and shape of flowers? Also is this quite common in healthy plants or just sick plants? I checked roots ans they are good and growing new ones. Thankyou for all your help. I have only been at this since last august...now i have 16 of them..they sure are addictive

Hi Mattryan, Welcome to Orchid growers anonymous! You are hereby pronounced a full blown addict!
Phals produce keiki's on healthy plants too, particularly if there has been some damage to the crown. A few of mine have basal keiki's. One is bursting with growth and has both basal and stem keiki's

Thankyou everyone for your help my bsal keiki is growing very well i have few ?'s. Do u need to rotate the pot? I take them outside during the day ...when not too hot? Also i do think that there has been some damage to the crown because this is the only phal that hasn't thrown a leaf...doing new roots though..will mother plant die?.i if she isn't putting out new leaves...she has 4 really nice firm leaves..is she getting her energy from the keiki?...Sorry soo new to this..Thankyou all!
