Done mounting my noid Dendrobiums.... pics!

I just finished mounting my dendrobiums awhile ago....thought I would share some pictures of the job. Noone hates pictures in this forum anyway.. I am still debating wether I should place some sphag-moss on the roots. What do you think? I will water them atleast a couple of times a day.

I think whether you should use moss will depend on your climate and I'm not an expert so can't really advise on that.

Nice size, you did a super job, I like the way you hung them on the branches rather that a flat piece of wood.
I've got a couple of big dens, that I don't know what to do with, but now I do. Thanks for sharing.

As for Moss, no expert either, but if your not sure give it a little while and see how it goes. You can always add some if you think they need it.
Maybe try one with moss and one without and see if there is much of a difference to how you need to care for them.

When you mount an orchid, moss is placed around the roots for two reasons (1) when you tie the plant to the mount with cat gut or fishing line, it may cut into the roots and damage them, so moss plas a role as cover; (2) till the roots catch on to the mount, the moss keeps the roots cool and plays its part in helping them grow. More so if your plants are in the open and exposed to the sun the moss will shield the roots and keep them cool. I use moss most times and have had no problems.

i agree with suresh about moss being a good proector. that is, IF you used fishing line. if you used panty hose, than you wouldnt need to protect the roots.

moss also helps with the watering frequency. i knoww that phal type dens ( which you have ) like lots of water during the growing season. so if you are ok with watering 3-4 times a day, than it should be ok with no moss. but if you would rather only be water 1-2 times a day, than i would add moss

one more question, were they in bloom when you mounted?

I decided to add sphagnum moss on my mounted Den.Phals. The moss definitely helps stabilize the plants alot better than without it. I appreciate every suggestions.

Where did you get those branches. We have about 10 big trees and I couldn't find a branch that would work like those did???????????? Very nice, branch bending.

Nice mounts Pinoychids. If you're in NY....deffinetly use some sphag on those roots. Last time I was there it was pretty hot. Sphag moss will actually help keep some humidity in those roots and prevent them from drying way too much.
