Default Alligator Orchid ?

Hello all!

I am new to this forum but i hope to become a regular very soon. A friend of mine just recently returned from a trip to Florida where they were introduced to what they describe as the most beautiful orchid ever, described to them as an "Alligator Orchid". Unfortunately there are no pictures and I am unable to find any reference to this species on the internet. They described it to me as a white/light green flower. Is anyone familiar with a species that may have a local common name of Alligator Orchid? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Obtaining them isn't the hard part. They are a ..... to keep alive and grow. You can grab them easily on eBay, and some orchid sellers have them from time to time. But. They require very specific conditions to grow successfully, and even more stringent to flower. Not trying to ward you off, but having killed 2 already, thought you should know.

Oh yea, very hard to grow. Unless you have a swamp for a yard. I live about 20 miles from where they grow in the Everglades and I have killed one and am having moderate success with my second one. That is just keeping it alive. And I have been growing orchids in south Florida for 35 years. Plus, it may never flower. And it is not a beautiful plant. No leaves, only roots. So, not much to look at. Not to discourage you, but those are the facts on this one!

Finding a "mature" ghost could be a challenge, as I'm not even sure what that definition would entail. Most mature ones only grow in the Everglades, and if someone had a mature one, they are smart enough to grow it and keep it. Depending on where you are, if may just be easier to vacation through the swamps than growing them

I'm not convinced that the Ghost Orchid is my "Alligator Orchid". Had anyone ever heard of the Ghost Orchid referred to as the "Alligator Orchid"? or another orchid species?
