HELP HELP !! weird looking things on catasetum

ok, no more guesses. this morning flower bud like structure started emerging from the tip. so its a spike, but a spike with root at the base, first time for me and the diameter is about 3x of the previous 2 spike. wouldn't it be nice if the flower is twice the size as well this time

ok....update on the flower ID, took the photo and show it to the nursery, seems like they mistakenly ID it initially. this hybrid is ctsm. Penang red X ctsm. Serdang Oo Oo

How's the speiki doing? That's what I call those undecided/confused growths. One of my dendrobiums makes them all the time.

It's actually that a confused growth. This can occur due to a mutation like in your Dendrobium where it happens every year. On the Catasetum here the plants seems normal looking at the previous flower stems. So it could be a one of occurence due to a sudden change in climate or anything in the enviroment.

Technically a shoot is induced as a vegetative growth but somewhere in it's early development it received a flowering induction and turned generative.
