Default Was bud blast but now maybe rot?

Hi Everyone...Again! I posted a message earlier this week and I can't remember what area I posted it in, but this is another question related to it. I had a plant shipped to me and the bud turned black and died on me before it opened. Many of you thought it was bud blast. Well here is my continuing situation. I thought the pseudobulb looked a little odd as it was a dark purplish almost black color but didn't seem squishy this last Monday. Well now it is starting to feel squishy. So know what do I do? I know I need to cut it off, but do I cut it off at the base of the pseudobulb? How long does it take for something like this to kill an entire plant? I am hoping that tomorrow morning will not be to late. If I cut it off, there will be three pseudobulbs left which I think should be fine. Is it possible to take care of this problem without removing the entire plant from the pot? This is part of a group of plants that a seller is already replacing two of that I got about 2 weeks ago, it is probably to late to file a claim for this plant as well. Oh yes, and the name of the plant is Lc. Merry Song. TIA!

Rot can move swiftly or can move slowly, but spread, it will. You need to cut off the rot with a sharp, sterile blade (razor blade or Xacto knife works best. Sprinkle cinnamon liberally over the cut on the good part of the plant. In good time a dormant bud may come to life and form a new growth.

Now as to the cause -- are you keeping plant too wet? Or was it frozen, perhaps, in shipment?

Hi Ross,
I have my plant at work so I do not have any cinnamon with me, but I do have a solution of Physan 20 with me in a spay bottle that I could use. I hate to wait until the end of the day to remove the rotted part, I do have razor blades at work just for my plants The bud wasn't dormant, it turned black and mushy too. I think the problem is a result from it getting to cold possibly in shipping although it was sent via priority mail and I was told that they keep their packages above a certain temp, but who knows. Anyways, I will try removing the bad part without having to take the plant complete out of the pot....wish me luck!

Okay so I cut the rotted part off and sprayed it with my solution of Physan 20. I think I was able to take the rotted part off before it got to the rest of the plant since when I cut at the base of the pseudobulb I was able to see green. I started out at different heights on the pseudobulb so I would have to cut off more then necessary, not that it probably matters. It took me about 3 tries to find a green area. Hopefully this will take care of the problem and the plant will live. I can't wait for it to bloom next year since the pictures of the blooms look beautiful! I will be sure to keep you posted on how it is doing! Thanks!

I think this should do it. I have used Physan in the past for this and it worked OK (or the plant didn't really need the help) but with cinnamon, the cut heals quicker. As a matter of prevention, be sure to not overwater during this healing process and also don't be afraid to use a KLN mix (Product Listing - Dyna-Gro K-L-N Root Growth Stimulant - 8 ounce Bottle) for a few weeks until you see positive signs of new roots emerging. Growths should follow.

Thank you everyone! I already have KLN that I use when I receive plants, and I also have the Pro-Tekt and the Orchid Pro fertalizer. Also, why am I not receiving emails when I get a response on my posts? I stopped getting them after the server was down yesterday

Don't know on that question! I personally hate getting e-mails for each post so I turned that off (can't remember how except its in your profile somewhere.)
