A friend just gave me a huge Orange Nugget orchid and I hve no idea on how to feed and care for it! Where do I begin?
The tag in the orchid has x BLC. Orange Nugget.

Hi Jeff,

You have a Brassolaeliocattleya. It's what the BLC stands for. Your plant will probably like high indirect light.
Will grow well in intermediate temps. It likes to dry out between watering so make sure to check the medium before watering.
Hope this helps a bit!

BTW, welcome to the forum! Don't forget to post an introduction!

First of all, welcome to the board.

Second I am assuming you are in Ashville NC (from your sign in). From that I would recommend an East window (maybe South, if it has a window screen or curtain in it) and keep it watered with good water (not softened water, but well water or city water) and search for links here on this board pertaining to Cattleyas.

Smile How Dee!

You have a beautiful orchid .. I love the contrast of orange against the green foliage!
I found this brief info with the picture .. I hope it will help ..
(From short term personal experience, my catts love strong light .. my Apple Blossom scents strong and longer after a day in the sun .. 4 or 5 hours .. I have only had them outside one day so I can't tell you over the long haul how they will hold up but I have read that they like their light Bright! They have pseudobulbs, which is that bulge in the stem above the base of the plant. This is a water reservior. You can let your catt go just about dry until you have to water again. At least wait until the top inch of medium has dried out before watering. It's good to keep a record also .. and in time get an idea of your patterns of maintainence.

It's all a matter of trail and error and observation..

Great Health to your new chid!

CATTLEYAS
Cattleyas are one of the most showiest and most rewarding to grow. Related Genera as follows:
A Blc is Brassavola X Cattleya X Laelia, known as a Brassolaeliocattleya
A Slc is Cattleya X Laelia X Sophronitis, known as Sophrolaeliocattleya
A Epc is Epidendrum X Cattleya, know as Epicattleya

Origin: Central and South America, and the Carribean region
Flower: Varies depending on species or variety
Position:Place in a very bright position all year round but protect from direct sunlight. An east or west facing window is ideal. Light requirements 1500-2000 foot-candles bright filtered light with no direct sun. Leaves should be light green in color, stiff and leathery in texture.
Temperature: Cattleyas prefer a warm environment with day temperatures 85-90F. During summer and vegetative period warm (up to 25oC/77oF) and airy. During winter most species and hybrids make do with 18oC/64oF during the daytime and 14oC/57oF (55-60F) at night.
Humidity: High - mist the leaves daily
Feeding: Every 2 weeks during plant growth period with a orchid fertilizer
Watering: According to demand during summer, only enough to stop the roots and bulbs drying out during winter Use soft lukewarm water (rainwater is ideal and contains less salts than tap water).
Re-potting: see re-potting
Propagation: From division of bulbs preferably when re-potting (in spring). Use a sharp knife to divide the plant ensuring that each new plant possesses at least3-5 bulbs with leaves. The resulting pieces will only regenerate if they have their leaves, and the bulbs only if they are fat and green.
Pests & diseases: Fairly rare due to the tough pseudo-bulbs and leathery leaves. The main enemy is scale insects, but also watch out for ants that may be attracted to the sticky secretions.
Tips: To ensure that your Cattleya flowers annually you will need to stand the plant in a cooler position and reduce watering as soon as the shoot has matured. If you keep the cattleya too warm it will produce lots of shoots and form only leaves.

Welcome Jeff. That's a beautiful catt! I'm a relative novice too. I've not been able to get any of my catts to rebloom yet. I think I just haven't found the right windowsill yet.

Hey Dorothy when I click on your like to your Yapoo Photos all I get is the Yapoo login screen. Could it be that the album permissions are set to private?

Terri
It should work .The Orchid Show photos are defaulted to public viewing. Yahoo is putting the finishing touches on a big upgrade to my Yahoo! Photos. That may have been the difficulty behind it. I know others have had no problem viewing them. Let me know if it fixes itself.
Thanks
