Ya know, if I were a vendor and some youngster showed just a smidgen of interest, I'd give them whatever it takes to get the flame going.
When I was into antique fishing tackle, I usually gave the youngsters a better price than the old, um, rhymes w/hearts...lol

One of our locat growers mounts his Catts on cedar shingles with a small NZ Moss pad underneath the roots.
I used cork chunks and lately EpiWeb with a small moss pad.

Haha it's funny you say that because the the guy that sells the orchids is old and kinda blunt and a tad rude. Last year when I bought my catt. It was my first orchid and i asked what was the easiest species and he rambled on a list of some of the ones he was selling and didn't bother showing me any of them, then I found my catt. and he gave me a care sheet for it and said it was an intermediate one. So I paid him and left.

Skip the moss. Water the roots more often. I have cattleyas in LECA I water every other day and sometimes I skip 3 days. They are growing like crazy. Moss is not a must have. ALl it does is hold moisture right? SO that you don't have to water so often. I think it's over rated. LOL OK bring it on you moss lovers.

it depends on what your humidity is. here in pa, its to dry to have no moss, at least for phals. i would have to water 2 or 3 times a day. and my laelia anceps, its potted in a bark mix, and i still water it once a day.
but the moss from your back yard wont work, sorry. but i got a big bag for 7 bucks, so check your garden center
