there are many good roots i think. just trim out the withered ones, those that is browned and filamen thin. those that are still juicy just leave as it is... i think fresh media might help. i usually give broken charcoal and sphagnum moss. moss on bottom and charcoal on top with some moss around the roots... that works for me in my climate. maybe your countrymen can give a more suitable advise... oh yeah, and perhaps give more humidity to the plant as well

Yeah, looks like there are some good ones. Remove any which are thin/hollow, if they are firm then leaev them. You have some which look brown but firm (as far as I can tell) leave those, they looked stained rather than dead.

The majority of people in the USA seem to like potting in bark mixes. Some like moss but many find that leaves things too wet.

Personally I would advise getting hold of some good quality orchid bark www.repotme.com have some good ones. Be careful about ones from a local store as they are often already too decayed before you start.

In the mean time unless the moss smells bad tuck it back in with the moss, but don't back it too tight. If you don't use all of what it was in before don't worry. It should be firm enough to not wobble everywhere, but not so tight that no air gets in.

If you decide to keep it in moss rather than bark I would still advise looking at the above website to get fresh stuff, moss needs replacing at least once a year.

I trimmed the dead roots and repotted it a lot looser. I also am being careful not to let it sit in too much water. Underneath it I placed a place of water and an upsidedown saucer to keep it from sitting directly in water. The leaves are turning a darker green and are begining to uncurl. Thank you so much for all of your help!! if you have any more advice please le me know. I really don't know much about orchids so everthing would be helpful.

Although I agree that this plant is not beyond rescue etc. and will improve with some tlc...I feel it is important to make the following point:

You JUST PURCHASED this plant. You did not mention that it was lying on a discount rack or "almost trash" bin at your Home Depot.
Thus I would have expected to bring home a nice lush plant with perky blooms and foliage NOT a fading, softy.
I would put that baby right back in it's pot and RETURN IT. PERIOD.
Or at the very least, get a replacement. There is no excuse for someone to sell you such a plant.

Your first orchid experience should not be immediately rescuing a failing phal from the store....

I agree completly, however I can't return it and so I think the best I can do is try and help it to the best of my ability. I didn't know what to look for in an Orchid, since this is my first time owning one, and this one looked the best out of all of them. It was cheaper than the ones that I have seen at other stores but I didn't realise that this should be a cause for concern. Thank you for your help and your concern and I will definatly do a better job of finding a healthy plant next time I go to buy one.

Awes...
I didn't mean to imply you did a bad job picking ur first chid
What I meant is that the vendor should have been more honorable.
Don't get discouraged though if your plant doesn't make it; I have been know to go to shows and tell the vendors I am limited on how many orchids I can buy based on how many I have killed off this past year

hahaha no, its okay, I understood what you meant. I do think that they should have done a better job of taking care of their orchids. Bt now the only thing I can do is take care of the one I brought home.
