Default Repotting

Good morning,

The pots should be so small that the roots fit snugly.

When repotting, fill the bottom of the pot first with chunky styrofoam peanuts (available at UPS and FEDEX), giving your Phal's roots something to grip but limiting the amount of bark and retained water.

When repotting, guide the bark among the roots but DON'T tap the pot on the table to settle the bark. Tapping the pot compresses the bark, fills the air spaces and leads to soggy feet.

Just make sure they are not the eco friendly ones that dissolve in water. That could be messy! It's getting harder and harder to find the old Styrofoam ones. I haven't been able to find them at all for some time.

Yeah, definately check they don't disolve first.

My hubby just bought back a big box of them from a delivery he had had at work and the first thing I did was stick one of them in a cup of water to see if it disolved or not. They didn't so I'm keeping these to put in pots if I need to.

Sometimes the shape of the roots mean you can't use as small a pot. For example I have one with roots that refuse to bend in to a small pot, but there is only the one root and the size pot I can get it into is WAY too big. I have packed the oposite side of the pot with packing peanuts to keep plenty of air and only a small amount of medium.
