I rescue orchids all the time. The plant vendor at the local Home Depot chucks them in the trash when they are done with bloom cycle and so I often walk away with 5-15 orchids for under a buck each. first thing I do is get them into a breathable media and out of the no drainage pots they come in. Give them a good soak in a mild balanced fert with seaweed and humic acid added drain them and put them into a nice spot. After a little rest I rebloom if they look strong(phals). Most of the time they are healthy plants, sometimes over or underwatered. after as little as a week with me they seem to look much happier. The manager at our local home depot was made a garden dept supervisor early in his career and when he said he knew nothing about plants was told "just remember, green side up" The people hired by the plant vendors often don't even know the difference between an annual or perineal. In contrast the local lowes puts plants on the 1/2 price rack that should have been marked down long ago and are ready for the dumpster. I wouldn't pay a nickel for anything I have seen on their clearance racks, unless of course I wanted the pot it was in.

I bought a salvage dendrobium nagasaki from my favorite local dealer - a homely looking plant at the time with 2 cains for $5. I gave it a home that was too close to the grow light and burnt some of the leaves pretty bad. After finding the right distance from the light (**oops**), the little guy has sent out a mess of new white roots and a brand new, health looking cain that has grown to tower over the original two.

It's by far the cheapest orchid in the collection... and I'd do it all over again if I had the chance. $5!!!!
