I am from Bangalore India . I am a beginner with orchids and would really be grateful if someone could help ... I just got an orchid plant and for a few days I am noticing these changes on the leaves. The leaves are becoming yellow and kind of wrinkles on them and there are black spots . The roots are white in colour, there was a bud but 2 of them are falling off. Please do help and let me know what is the problem and the solution too..

Hello

Welcome to the Orchid Board.

Your plant looks like a Dendrobium. From the picture the roots look good but I'm wondering if it is getting enough moisture.

How often do you water and how long?

Was this repotted recently? In my experience, Dens often 'pout' after a repot, dropping foliage.

It may be reacting to the change in it's environment.

Morning sun is OK but be sure it's not too intense and hot. Bright indirect light may be better.

Since your plant is in an open net pot it will drain and dry out very fast especially if your climate is on the dry side. Do you soak it when you water or pour water through the pot?

You might try submerging the pot in a container of water and let it stand for 15 mins or so. Then let it dry out before watering again.

My Dendrobium likes the soaking/drying treatment.

Just based off what I noticed immediately - one of the leaves appears to have a high level of anthocyanin pigmentation that the plant uses to shield itself from excess amounts of sunlight.

My first suggestion would be to lower the intensity of lighting the plant is receiving just a bit.

Unfortunately without knowing too much else about how you're watering the plant, there's not much I can say in regards to whether the plant is dropping buds as a result of over watering or under watering (both of which can cause bud drop). The other possibility of bud drop is too much sunlight.

yellow leaves and black spots - please help Female
Default Hi

Hi Elsa, I am also from Bangalore and new to orchid growing. I grow my orchids on an East facing balcony like you and this gets bright sun till around 12:00 noon. I was watering every day in the summer and misting twice but now that it is cloudy and cooler am watering alternate days. I fertilise weekly weakly with NPK 19-19-19. Dendrobiums, from what I have read, do well in bright sun, so an East facing location should be good.

Hi All, this is my first post on Orchid Board and let me say I find this forum very interesting with many knowledgable members. Have been happily lurking on this forum for quite some time now - thank you all for the lovely pictures and the useful information you guys have shared on this forum! I have a few NOID dendrobiums, phals and a few Indian species - Den falconeri, Den devonianum, Den jenkinsii, Vanda stangeana and Vanda coerulea. I am new to growing orchids and am going to have my first re-bloom on my Den Inthuwong X Trudy Brandt. I am not finding a New thread button to start a new thread, help!

It's on the top left corner near some of the headings.

For example:

It's above the heading "Threads in Forum: Beginner's Discussion" on the Beginner's Discussion forum page.
