Default footcandle

Okay i just bought a rack and mounted 2 t8 lamps on it(4bulbs). I found an article that says the t8 32 watt bulbs give 500 foot candles at 12 inches per 2 bulbs. My 3 orchids all have flower spikes on them at the moment and i was wondering to get 1000 footcandles is that 12 inches from the top of the flower spike, or the green leaves of the plant?

Very nice. I'm also toying with the idea of lamps, but need to research that a little more. I know nothing about it. That's one of the reasons I was drawn to your post. Hopefully, more answers will follow.

10 to 12 inches away for your phals should be fine. What is the other plant in the photo?

Your oncidium intergeneric looks like a Wilsonara to me. I would say leaf tops no more than 4 to 6 inches away from the light if I had to take a guess.
