Well, it was definately the best thing to repot from the look of those roots. Sometimes it can end a being a case of saving the plant first, then you can get new flowers later, leaving it could kill the plant when the roots are that bad.
Anyway, as you have signs of root growth at the top that gives it good chances of eventual recovery, but don't be suprised if it looses some leaves on the way. With such a damanged root system it is unlikely to be able to support them all.
