There is no problem with glazed pots... you will be fine. I think it is a misconception. Look at my yellow phal in a glazed pot, no problem. Its been in continuous bloom for around three years. I have several phals in glazed pots. (I didn't choose the pots, my mom used them since I was young. I am using one of her old pots. One of my oldest phal has been in the same glazed pots for many many years)

At one time plastic pots were thought of being evil...lol

The glazed pots are just not porous like unglazed pots. Air does not move though the clay. Use some airy growing media like bark mix and you will be fine. Hey, plastic pots are just as poor with air movement, and people use sphag in them...a media that doesn't have the same air movement as bark

BTW the insides of the pots are also glazed on these pots. I noticed some of the other ones sold aren't. I also have cattleya in these pots.

I hear salt can build up on the clay. But any unglazed clay surfaces can build up salts and calcium from tap water. The plants in the unglazed pots haven't had a problem with that yet either, and my entire university's collection has clay pots with crusty build up all over the pots, you will be grossed out if I showed some pictures.

I am also using some tiny glazed pots with the insides unglazed for some of my mini orchids with decorative leaves. All sorts of different orchid alliances. I will soon see if I will ever have problems, which I doubt. (I do wish they glazed the insides as well though)

I agree with Fren. The pot isn't the problem (necessarily) the culture is what keeps them from rotting. Phals (or any other orchids) can be grown in just about any container you can imagine -- you just have to adjust to the watering regime required by the pot.

Question rsfrid ? your avatar ???

I know this is a but

rsfrid - ? - is your avatar an epidendrum pseudepidendrum or an Epi. Mabel Kanda (epi. floribundum x epi cordigerum 'Paradise')
I have the M. K. with the beginnings of a stalk!
If you have either? Is it fragrant?

Thanks

Nope. Epidendrum tampensis. Fragrant native of Florida and Cuba.
