I bought this orchid a few months ago at Lowes and it did not have any blooms on it when i got it so it was a nice surprise when it started to bloom on Saturday. There were no tags on it besides it being a Phal. Does any body know what type it is?

The picture is fairly dark, making it kind of hard to see, but I think that we can safely say this is a NoID hybrid, aka Phalaenopsis unknownicus. Most Phals purchased in big box stores are unlabeled/unidentified hybrids which are essentially mass-produced for the market. So many new hybrid crosses are added each year to the already-thousands and thousands out there that without a proper label they are impossible to identify.

It's pretty, so enjoy it for what it is!

I will try to take a better pic. They usually have labels were i got it but this one was on the clearance rack for $2 or $3 so defiantly could not pass it up.

Most tags will just say Phalaenopsis, arround me they will generally be called Phalaenopsis 2 spike or something like that (just indicating that they are selling it with two spikes)

Sometimes they will have another name but it's not always acurate. For example my garden center is selling Phal Gigantea just now, but it's not that at all. It looks nothing like it in fact... Oh and they have these suposed 'Gigantea' in a whole wide range of colours... none of them anything like the species gigantea.

As John said there are many many Phals sold which have not even had their parantage recorded or registered, letalone labled on the plant.

Don't worry though... it looks gorgeous, I just love purple Phals and you can enjoy it just as much without a name. It will be one that requires standard Phal care from the look of the flowers and that's all you really need to know.

A lovely No-id. Treasure it- my best Phal is a noid.
It's kind of like asking what breed your stray cat is- there's just no way to know.
