Bessea's are beautiful but can get a little cranky with water quality
If he is a new grower ... The I would say a wildcat "Bobcat" easy grower and it will be easy for ur Bro to see if it needs water, by checking the bulbs. Doesn't need a lot of light and can grow coolish to hot. Nice funky red flowers - Cool arching branches.
That would be my choice for a new grower.

I'm sure you will come up with something great, Should be a wonderful surprise

Give him the gift of the stinky one. He'll never figure out where the stench is coming from. He'll never suspect the pretty flower.

Smile Hmmm...

Well .. if he doesn't move right away, I will price around for the bulbo echinolabium ..
and when it finally blooms ..
give him a glass dome to contain it in.. ..
just cause I'm so nice

hmm though the bulbo phalaenopsis is more 'manly' looking .. as it's dark and unfrilly and has a 5 o'clock shadow ..

I saw one in a display last year (MAOC), and went in for a closer look and a sniff. It was bad. After a few moments, i took another and then my stomach turned. It was real bad. if you ever get the chance, do it. Smells horrible, but you can say youve done it.
