Dendrobium Baby! What to do with the Keiki? Advice Please. Female
Default Dendrobium Baby! What to do with the Keiki? Advice Please.

Well having become comfortable with Phals and having given up smoking for nearly a month now (Woot!) I rewarded myself with the purchase of two reduced Dendrobium Noids.

One of them though came with the bonus of a little Keiki, which was discovered as I was checking out the roots.

The Keiki came away with ease and is now sitting in a shot glass with the roots just skimming some water.
The baby is approximately an inch (2.5cm) tall, looks heathy enough and seems to be growing.

This is my first Keiki and now I have a choice.

Mount? Pot? or Other?

Mounting Options
The mount is triangular in shape, the wood is unknown though it's old driftwood (which has already been cleaned several times) and is heavy for it's size.
The potential mount can be hung or left standing. It has a dip on one side when it's stood, which would almost act like a pot, and has drainage cracks in the bottom of said dip.
Though in time, I'm guessing, I would have to move the plant on to another mount as this current mount is roughly the same size as the mother plant?

Potting Options
The smallest proper pot I have is 12cm, and the bark I have I presume would have to be made a bit smaller?
Other than that pot I would have to convert an old yogurt or one of those take-away dip pots (that's not difficult though).

Other
I am really unsure of what would be the best option.
I'm also open to other suggestions of how to keep this bonus baby going.

Please help? Thanks in advance for any advice and suggestions.

photos would be nice, just how small is it? I've mounted nearly all of my Dens, they seem to love it and are growing well

I'll try and get a picture up within the next couple of days. At this time I am unable to, sorry

Currently: The plant leaves (of which there are four) are about 1/4 inch (6mm) to an inch long (2.5 cm), but not much more than that if any. There appears to be two maybe three psuedobulbs which are tiny about 0.5 cm? (or what ever they are? I presume psuedobulbs?)
With the longest root getting the plant whole size up to about 3 inches (approx 7.5 cm) long. It has a several smaller roots in development.

I got a dendrobium earlier this year with several keikis. I decided to try potting them in a variety of ways as an experiment. Mounted on wine corks. Semi-Hydroponic method. Traditional plastic orchid pot using LECA as the medium.

They're all doing great but I think I'm seeing larger, more vigorous growth in the Semi-Hydro.

Lot's of roots on the mounted one but it is smaller. I'm not as diligent when it comes to watering so maybe that's why.

The potted ones are doing OK but are behind the S/H ones in size also.

I think any of your options would work fine.

Maureen

Cheers Maureen, you've just given me another mounting option
I knew you could mount on Cork, but it slipped my mind completely about wine corks. We have quite a few as Hubby has a wine batch on the brew... So I should be able to pilfer a couple.
Mmm.. something to consider at least.

The Semi-Hydro interests me, but I seriously lack experience with that method. Though I do have a few small and rather nice looking glasses

I really do want to get this one growing nicely as Mummy plant has the most wonderful Honey smell.

Oh well of to the grind that is work for now.
Hopefully get back to this tomorrow
Have fun all.

As promised, some pics, maybe a little later than advertised.
Still is pretty much as seen here. But I may just try to mount on a wine cork.
